Commercial Accounts Portal

Lennox, a leader in high-efficiency HVAC systems, wanted to launch its business into commercial building automation with a best-in-class product. Lennox partnered with Tonic3 to create a centralized portal where facilities managers and building owners can monitor, control, and troubleshoot maintenance issues, in order to efficiently operate and manage costs of their entire network of locations.

The approach

Engaging In User-Centered Design

Meeting the needs of end-users and involving them throughout the design process are core tenets of good UX. Following UX best practices, Lennox invited a group of its key customers and internal stakeholders to participate in a series of day-long sketching sessions (Design Studios). During these sessions, Tonic3 identified, prioritized and helped facilitate consensus to define key product requirements. Compared to a traditional “requirements doc” approach, the Design Studio sessions drastically reduced the time, effort, and overhead of the project’s requirements-gathering phase.

Building And Testing High-Fidelity Clickable Prototypes

Informed by the Design Studio sessions, the Tonic3 project team spent the next 2 weeks creating a low-fidelity prototype to take into user testing. After several rounds of iterative testing and design refinement, Tonic3 produced a high-fidelity prototype that users loved. The final production-ready prototype and accompanying documentation were delivered to Lennox and served as their guide for development.

High Praise From The Ceo

Lennox implemented phase one of the project with great results. In the Q2 ’18 earnings call, CEO Todd Bluedorn highlighted this project as one of the factors for the tremendous success of their national accounts business. High praise indeed! Although this was Lennox’s first time engaging in a UX-led project, their commitment to the process allowed them to catch up quickly, and maximize the opportunity to build a product that truly meets their customers’ needs.
